Honouring the 50th Anniversary of NAIDOC Week

This year marks the 50th anniversary of NAIDOC Week, a significant milestone celebrating the culture, achievements, and enduring strength of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The 2025 theme, “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy,” highlights both the resilience of the past and the bright future being shaped by emerging Indigenous leaders.

Held from 6–13 July 2025, NAIDOC Week invites all Australians to reflect on the journey, build unity, and support the vision of First Nations communities. naidoc.org.auocpe.nt.gov.au

What Is NAIDOC Week?

NAIDOC Week is an annual celebration, held in the first full week of July that honours the oldest continuing cultures on Earth while fostering respect, learning, and unity across Australia.

Designed with Purpose: Partnering with Ausdesigns

To mark this milestone, Trafficwerx NT collaborated with Ausdesigns, a Darwin-based initiative of Helping People Achieve (HPA). Ausdesigns champions meaningful employment opportunities for adults with disabilities, combining creativity with purpose. As a long-term supplier, they delivered this special project with care, heart, and an unwavering attention to cultural detail.

A Collaboration Rooted in Country: Thank You, Aadit (Eddy)

Our uniform design brings to life the deep connection to Larrakia Country through the creative work of Aadit (Eddy). Each symbol and colour tells the story of Country, blending our brand identity with vibrant tones inspired by the 2025 NAIDOC theme – “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy.” The result: uniforms that are both striking and meaningful.

Embedding Road Safety in Every Thread

Beyond celebrating culture, these uniforms serve as mobile messengers of safety. Each back panel features a QR code linking directly to the National Road Safety Week pledge, encouraging drivers to commit to the mantra “Drive so others survive.” This fusion of cultural pride with safety advocacy allows every wearer to spark important conversations and influence safer driving behaviours across the Territory.

More Than Just a Uniform

This project embodies multiple values we uphold at Trafficwerx NT:

  • Supporting Indigenous artists and designers
  • Partnering with purpose-driven not-for-profits
  • Promoting road safety and community wellbeing
  • Honouring Country and cultural stories
  • Celebrating First Nations’ strength, vision, and legacy

Every stitch, colour, and symbol was carefully selected to reflect traffic safety, our operational Territory context, and our evolving cultural relationships.

As we celebrate 50 years of NAIDOC Week, our Indigenous uniform stands as a statement of unity – bridging culture and safety, past and future. It’s a testament to the values we champion: community, accountability, respect, and excellence. Together, we honour heritage while driving towards a future where every Territory road user arrives home safe.

We’re proud to announce that Trafficwerx NT has been awarded Traffic Management Project of the Year at the 2024 CCF NT Earth Awards, recognising our work on Downer Urban’s Asphalt Resurfacing Program 2024.

Raising the Bar in NT Traffic Management

This award celebrates our leadership in delivering complex traffic control across one of Darwin’s most challenging resurfacing programs. Partnering with Downer, our team managed multiple live traffic environments across key intersections and arterial roads, including Stuart Highway near the Amy J and Woolner intersections.

For the first time in the Urbans project, traffic management was required to function under live traffic conditions, significantly increasing both complexity and risk. This demanded meticulous planning, heightened vigilance, and seamless coordination across every night shift.

Innovation in Action – Safety First

Every shift required agility and precision, with up to three full triple-lane closures installed and removed per night. Our ability to stage, re-open, and adapt work zones in real time ensured both safety and mobility for motorists and pedestrians.

Key innovations included:

  • Deployment of TMA Trucks for high-speed protection in live traffic environments
  • Introduction of body cameras (in partnership with DLI) to protect traffic controllers and document incidents such as drunk or aggressive drivers
  • Daily breathalyser testing to ensure every team member was fit for duty
  • 24/7 support from a Traffic Management Designer (TMD), available both day and night to guide crews and resolve issues instantly
  • Accessible pedestrian detours with lighting, signage, ramps, and spotter assistance for mobility needs

The result? Zero incidents, minimal disruption, and complete delivery on time — in one of the Northern Territory’s most complex urban works programs to date.

Why This Award Matters

The CCF NT Earth Awards highlight excellence in civil construction and infrastructure. Winning Traffic Management Project of the Year is a major milestone for Trafficwerx NT, recognising our expertise in:

  • Managing live traffic work zones
  • Delivering night shift projects under pressure
  • Upholding the highest AGTTM and NT WHS standards
  • Supporting major contractors and the NT Government with innovative, safety-first traffic management solutions

Building Safer Roads for the Territory

This recognition builds on our track record of managing some of the NT’s most significant projects, including:

  • The Berrimah Road Overpass
  • The Darwin Ship Lift Project
  • Annual community events like the Variety NT Bash

At Trafficwerx NT, we remain committed to advancing road safety through state-of-the-art TMA Trucks, investment in local jobs, and mentoring the next generation of traffic controllers.

Showcasing Road Safety Careers in the Territory

The Darwin VET Careers Expo was buzzing with energy  and Trafficwerx NT was right at the centre of it. Our outside pitch turned heads with live demonstrations of what it really takes to keep roads safe, from setting up traffic management to operating our state-of-the-art TMA Trucks.

Visitors got an up-close look at the technology and teamwork behind the hi-vis, and more importantly, they learned how a career in traffic management offers purpose, growth, and the chance to make a real impact on Northern Territory roads.

Meet Tia: From School Leaver to Traffic Controller

One of the highlights of the day was hearing from Tia, one of our youngest traffic controllers. Starting straight out of school, she’s already making her mark in the industry. Her story resonated with students exploring their own career paths, proving that with the right attitude and training, road safety can be a powerful first step into the workforce.

Pathways into the Industry

We spoke with hundreds of students about how to kickstart a career in traffic management. The pathway is simple:

  • A manual P-plate licence
  • A white card (construction induction)
  • A traffic management course (TC1/TMI1)
  • A commitment to safety on the road

With these, young people can apply to join our crew as a traffic controller or even work toward becoming a TMA operator – roles that get you outdoors, on the road, and protecting lives every day.

Driving Home the Most Important Message

More than just a career showcase, our biggest message to young people was clear: drive so others survive. Good driving habits and a clean licence aren’t just vital for keeping our roads safe — they can also open doors to rewarding careers in traffic management.

As our Media Liaison Officer Kathleen put it:

“At Trafficwerx NT, safety isn’t a slogan, it’s who we are. The next generation of drivers and road workers have the power to carry that culture forward.”

What’s Next?

The Expo was just the beginning. With National Road Safety Week 2025 on the horizon, we’ll continue connecting with schools, workplaces, and the wider community to build a safer driving culture across the Territory.

When Road Safety Advocacy Meets Action in the Top End

Peter’s visit included time with our head office team and a powerful appearance at the VET Careers Expo, where he engaged with students about driving habits, the dangers of distraction, and the importance of being part of the road safety movement.

From Personal Tragedy to a National Mission

Peter Frazer founded the SARAH Group after the tragic loss of his daughter Sarah, who died in a preventable crash on the Hume Freeway alongside a tow truck driver. Their story catalysed a national call to action that continues to save lives.

In 2023, Australia recorded 1,253 road fatalities –  a 7.3% increase from the previous year (BITRE).

Young drivers aged 17–25 are overrepresented in fatalities, despite making up just 10–15% of licence holders (TAC).

Empowering NT Students to Become Road Safety Advocates

At the Expo, Peter spoke with our supervisor, Chris Pettit, about the role traffic controllers and TMA operators play in keeping road workers and motorists safe. Their conversation highlighted how a safe driving culture starts the moment a young person gets behind the wheel.

“The choices young people make behind the wheel today impact everyone’s tomorrow.” –  Peter Frazer

Road Safety Culture Starts with Us

Kathleen from our team shared a key takeaway:

“At Trafficwerx NT, safety is embedded in everything we do. It’s about creating a culture of accountability, not just ticking boxes.”

This is why we proudly support National Road Safety Week and partner with organisations like SARAH Group; to advocate, educate, and lead by example.

What’s Ahead for National Road Safety Week 2025

NRSW 2025 focuses on everyday drivers making safer decisions, from young drivers and tradies to families and freight operators. We’re proud to help bring this message to the Northern Territory through events, school visits, and workplace safety programs.

Together, we can pledge to drive so other’s survive. Let’s keep road safety in motion.

Each year, National Road Safety Week shines a spotlight on the lives impacted by road trauma and asks all Australians to take action in creating safer roads.

In 2025, the message remains as powerful as ever:
Every life counts.
Every choice we make behind the wheel can save a life—or take one.

At Trafficwerx NT, safety is not just part of what we do. It’s the foundation of everything we stand for. From deploying industry-leading TMA Trucks on high-risk worksites to ensuring every member of our team returns home safely, we’re proud to lead with purpose and precision.

Why National Road Safety Week Matters

Here in the Northern Territory, we work across some of the most challenging environments in Australia. Long open roads, regional highways, and major infrastructure works all demand a heightened focus on safety.

National Road Safety Week gives us a moment to reflect, to remember, and to educate. It’s a time to:

  • Honour those injured or lost on our roads
  • Encourage safer choices behind the wheel
  • Promote the role of professional traffic management in preventing harm

Supporting Those Who Keep Our Roads Safe

Traffic controllers and road workers put their safety on the line every day. According to national data, they’re up to 17 times more likely to be seriously injured on the job compared to the average Australian worker.

Work zone safety is not a suggestion—it’s essential. Drivers can play their part by:

  • Reducing speed when approaching roadworks
  • Following all signage and traffic controller directions
  • Staying focused and avoiding distractions
  • Never driving under the influence or while fatigued

These simple steps protect real people. Parents, siblings, friends, and colleagues—all working to improve and maintain the roads we share.

How Trafficwerx NT Is Getting Involved

Throughout National Road Safety Week 2025, Trafficwerx NT is:

  • Raising awareness across social media and in the community
  • Sharing staff stories to highlight the human side of road safety
  • Lighting up in yellow to honour those affected by road trauma
  • Supporting school and workplace education on safe driving habits

We’re proud to be a visible part of the solution, and we invite others to join us.

Take the Pledge

National Road Safety Week is a call to action. One that starts with a personal commitment to do better—every day.

Take the pledge to drive so others survive at
www.roadsafetyweek.com.au

Encourage your team, your family, and your community to take the pledge too. It only takes a minute, but it could save a life.

Every Life Counts

As a company built on safety, Trafficwerx NT is proud to support National Road Safety Week and its mission to reduce trauma on our roads.

We believe in protecting people—whether that’s a road worker in a high-risk zone or a family driving home after a long day. Let’s work together to make the roads safer for everyone.

Drive safe. Drive aware. Every life counts.

At Trafficwerx NT, we are proud to have played a small part in supporting an incredible event—the Variety NT Bash Top End Trek. As sponsors of the Tonka Tow car, we were honoured to contribute to the amazing efforts of Variety NT, which raised an incredible $283,101.04 across all teams this year.

Tonka Tow Truck on the Variety NT Top End Trek

Variety NT works tirelessly to help children in need across the Northern Territory, providing vital support and life-changing opportunities. The Top End Trek is just one of the many ways they bring the community together for a great cause, and we are humbled to be involved through our sponsorship of Tonka Tow.

One of the highlights of the event was Orange Day, and we couldn’t resist adding some extra fun by kitting out the Tonka Tow team in traffic cone outfits!  It was a fantastic way to raise awareness for road safety while embracing the spirit of the bash. Our team looked the part and had a great time representing safety in a colourful, lighthearted way.

We were also honoured to receive a certificate of appreciation from Variety NT for our involvement. While our contribution was small, we’re proud to have been part of such a meaningful cause and to support the amazing work that Variety NT does.

We’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the participants, donors, and volunteers who made this year’s trek such a success. Your dedication ensures that Variety NT can continue their important work.
