Showcasing Road Safety Careers in the Territory
The Darwin VET Careers Expo was buzzing with energy and Trafficwerx NT was right at the centre of it. Our outside pitch turned heads with live demonstrations of what it really takes to keep roads safe, from setting up traffic management to operating our state-of-the-art TMA Trucks.
Visitors got an up-close look at the technology and teamwork behind the hi-vis, and more importantly, they learned how a career in traffic management offers purpose, growth, and the chance to make a real impact on Northern Territory roads.
Meet Tia: From School Leaver to Traffic Controller
One of the highlights of the day was hearing from Tia, one of our youngest traffic controllers. Starting straight out of school, she’s already making her mark in the industry. Her story resonated with students exploring their own career paths, proving that with the right attitude and training, road safety can be a powerful first step into the workforce.
Pathways into the Industry
We spoke with hundreds of students about how to kickstart a career in traffic management. The pathway is simple:
- A manual P-plate licence
- A white card (construction induction)
- A traffic management course (TC1/TMI1)
- A commitment to safety on the road

With these, young people can apply to join our crew as a traffic controller or even work toward becoming a TMA operator – roles that get you outdoors, on the road, and protecting lives every day.
Driving Home the Most Important Message
More than just a career showcase, our biggest message to young people was clear: drive so others survive. Good driving habits and a clean licence aren’t just vital for keeping our roads safe — they can also open doors to rewarding careers in traffic management.
As our Media Liaison Officer Kathleen put it:
“At Trafficwerx NT, safety isn’t a slogan, it’s who we are. The next generation of drivers and road workers have the power to carry that culture forward.”
What’s Next?
The Expo was just the beginning. With National Road Safety Week 2025 on the horizon, we’ll continue connecting with schools, workplaces, and the wider community to build a safer driving culture across the Territory.
