Traffic Control Jobs in Darwin: A step-by-step guide to starting out in Traffic Management

Traffic Control Jobs in Darwin: Where to start? A step-by-step guide to starting out in Traffic Management

Embarking into the world of traffic control can be daunting, especially when faced with a whirlwind of jargon and confusion. At Trafficwerx NT, we understand the challenges newcomers face in navigating this industry. That’s why we have recently introduced an in-house traffic management course to streamline the recruitment process. In this post, we’ll break down the essential steps to help you get started in the traffic management industry in Darwin, Northern Territory and help them interested in Traffic Control Jobs.

Step 1: Knowing the Requirements

To become a traffic controller in the NT, you will need the following:

  • Australian driver’s license: If you have an international license, you can find information on transferring your overseas license at https://nt.gov.au/driving/licence/new-nt-residents-and-visitors/transfer-your-overseas-licence
  • White Card: Complete the Introduction to Construction Industry course (CPCWHS1001) to obtain the required White Card, which ensures you are prepared to work safely in the construction industry.
  • WZ2 and WZ3 tickets: These refer to specific courses that are essential for traffic controllers. WZ2 corresponds to the Control Traffic with Stop Slow Bat course (RIIWHS205E), while WZ3 relates to the Implement Traffic Management Plan course (RIIWHS302E). These courses are also known as Traffic Controller tickets and Traffic Management Implementor tickets, respectively.

Step 2: Finding a Course Provider

When considering a career in traffic management, it is crucial to find a reliable course provider. Whether you are new to the industry or a backpacker seeking regional work opportunities, it’s essential to plan and book your spot in a traffic management course. In the Darwin area, course availability may be limited, with most providers offering only one course per month due to commitments in other parts of the Northern Territory. At Trafficwerx, we aim to assist you by opening an expression of interest. Simply provide us with your email and contact number, and we will notify you as soon as the course dates are confirmed. Look for a course provider that can deliver certificates of attainment within a few days, as some providers may have a lengthy 28-day turnaround time, resulting in missed job opportunities.

If you already possess a physical White Card from another state, it is generally accepted in most cases. The Northern Territory recognises White Cards from different states, and they do not have an expiration date. This flexibility allows you to utilise any state’s White Card to meet the requirements.

However, it’s crucial to note that obtaining a White Card in the Northern Territory requires completing the course in person. Unlike some other states that offer online courses, the Northern Territory does not provide an online option. Be cautious of websites advertising $35 online NT White Card courses, as these are typically scams and should be avoided.

When you are applying for Traffic Control jobs, it’s ideal to have all documents to hand via email or in person.

Step 3: Course Completion and Certification

After successfully completing the traffic management course, you will receive a certificate of attainment for your respective courses. The next steps involve applying for additional documents:

Step 4: Applying for Work

Once you have obtained the necessary qualifications and submitted your applications, you will receive receipts for your licenses and tickets. These receipts act as temporary proof of your qualifications while awaiting the physical documents. It is crucial to always keep the receipts with you during work. To avoid any mishaps, consider storing them in a zip-lock bag and scanning them and keeping a digital copy on your phone.

Starting a career in traffic control may seem overwhelming at first, but by following these step-by-step guidelines, you can streamline the process and enter the industry with confidence. Keep in mind that the information provided is accurate as of June 2023 in the Northern Territory, but changes are expected with the upcoming harmonisation of temporary traffic management and across other training providers.

For more information or to inquire about our courses, follow us on Facebook or email [email protected].

Samantha Eveleigh: Making History in the Traffic Management Industry

We are incredibly proud to share the inspiring journey of Samantha Eveleigh, a true trailblazer in the Traffic Management industry. At the recent TMAA Annual Awards, Sam achieved a remarkable feat by securing two out of the three accolades. Crowned Indigenous Traffic Controller of the Year 2022 and National Traffic Controller of the Year 2022, her accomplishments caught the attention of National Indigenous TV, who approached her for an interview to shed light on her achievements and the impactful work she does in communities.

6 Years at TWX

Sam has been an invaluable member of the Trafficwerx NT team for the past six years. Throughout her tenure, she has excelled in her role as a Traffic Controller, catching the attention of Chris Boyer, the Director of Trafficwerx NT. Recognizing her potential, Chris encouraged Sam to pursue her WZ1 tickets, granting her the opportunity to become a Traffic Management Designer. Initially uncertain about her ability to complete the rigorous five-day course, which included challenging assessments, Sam pushed past her doubts and successfully obtained her certification. She can now implement changes on-site to ensure the utmost safety for all road users, workers, and pedestrians.

Expressing her deep passion for working in Traffic Control, Sam emphasizes how the ever-changing outdoor environment perfectly suits her career aspirations. She also cherishes the opportunity to work remotely and in various communities. Sam fondly recounts how young people approach her with curiosity about her job, which she utilizes as a platform to promote safe road practices in communities that may not otherwise receive such vital information. She highlights the vast potential within the Traffic Management field, emphasizing how it can serve as an entry-level job leading to roles in design and even civil construction.

Indigenous Employment

Sam, an Aboriginal woman based in Darwin, proudly traces her ancestry to Galiiwin’ku, the home of the Yolngu people. Recognizing the underrepresentation of Indigenous individuals in the industry, she hopes that her prestigious awards will inspire more Indigenous people to pursue their own certifications and embark on successful careers in Traffic Management. Importantly, Sam emphasizes the existence of employment services that can assist with startup costs, including course fees and personal protective equipment (PPE).

Road Safety

Road safety has always been Sam’s top priority. She is renowned for going above and beyond to ensure that the right people are promptly informed if a potential incident arises. Even outside of work hours, she diligently checks her own setups, mitigating risks and preventing incidents. It is this unwavering dedication, coupled with her comprehensive knowledge of Traffic Management and strong relationships with major civil construction companies, that has earned her these prestigious awards. Sam remains committed to using her voice to advocate for improved working conditions and increased opportunities for Indigenous individuals entering the workforce.

We invite you to watch Sam’s inspiring interview by clicking here.

Trafficwerx NT: Supporting National Road Safety Week 2023 with a Vibrant Transformation

At the beginning of this year, Trafficwerx NT proudly sponsored the SARAH Group and National Road Safety Week, actively promoting road safety and striving to make a difference. Our fleet of Utes proudly displays a yellow ribbon on each windscreen, symbolizing our staff’s commitment to driving in a manner that protects and saves lives. We encourage others to join us in this pledge, working together to ensure everyone’s safety on the road.

Northern Territory

The road fatality rate in the Northern Territory is four times higher than the national average, with 52 lives tragically lost on NT roads last year. These accidents are primarily caused by driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, failure to wear seat belts, and speeding. As leaders in the road safety industry, we recognize the critical importance of taking every possible measure to keep people safe on the roads. Our top priority is the safety of over 35 dedicated Traffic Controllers who work tirelessly on NT roads every day. Obeying work zone regulations is vital to protect both road workers and motorists. We kindly request that you treat our Traffic Controllers with respect and kindness, just as you would expect in your own workplace. If you have any genuine concerns, please contact us directly as soon as it is safe to do so.

National Road Safety Week

Throughout May, we transformed our iconic orange and black branding to teal and yellow, representing National Road Safety Week. This change aims to spark curiosity and encourage people to inquire about the reason behind it. Our goal is to raise awareness and prompt individuals to reconsider their driving habits, ultimately leading to safer roads for everyone. To honor the 52 lives lost in the NT last year, we displayed 52 candles and invited others to take the pledge to drive for the survival of others. Additionally, our office was beautifully illuminated in yellow throughout the month, and our staff proudly wore yellow ribbon lapel pins.

TrafficJAM

Last year, in collaboration with CGC, Trafficwerx NT organized the first-ever road safety GameJam. We invited game developers from the NT and beyond to create games with a road safety theme. Within a month, 26 developers submitted an impressive 13 games. The event culminated in an awards ceremony attended by game developers, local authorities, and other civil construction companies. Now, one year later, we hope these games can serve as effective tools for families and educational institutions to instill safe driving practices in young individuals and make them consider the consequences of dangerous driving.

While road safety goes beyond a single national week, we believe that our extensive promotion of the campaign, the incorporation of its branding, and the presence of the pledge in our reception area initiate crucial conversations. By sparking thought and driving change, we aspire to make safe driving the new normal across Australia. After all, safe road users, workers, and pedestrians alike yearn for the same thing—a secure and protected journey.

To learn more about the SARAH Group, we invite you to watch the heartbreaking story of Sarah and how her father, Peter Frazer, dedicated his life to making Australian roads safer.

Trafficwerx NT Shines at the TMAA Annual Conference and Awards: Celebrating Sam Eveleigh’s Double Triumph

The TMAA Annual Conference and Awards, an esteemed event in the Traffic Management industry, brought together professionals from across Australia. Hosted by the Traffic Management Association of Australia, this gathering showcased innovative businesses, featured speakers sharing best practices, and recognized outstanding individuals. Spanning three days, it offered captivating activities, including a Golf Day and an Industry Leaders breakfast. The highlight was undoubtedly the TMAA Annual Conference, followed by the eagerly awaited Awards ceremony, revealing the coveted title of Traffic Controller of the Year.

TMAA Awards

At the start of the event at RASC Royal Pines in Gold Coast, March 2023, Trafficwerx NT’s CEO, Matthew Bereni, made an exciting announcement. In addition to the prestigious Traffic Controller of the Year award, two new accolades were introduced: Rising Star Traffic Controller of the Year and Indigenous Traffic Controller of the Year. These awards were significant, showcasing the qualities needed to excel in a constantly evolving environment and highlighting the underrepresentation of Indigenous workers in the field.

Supporting Sam

Trafficwerx NT had a strong presence at the conference and awards ceremony, with a delegation from the Darwin office and two remote workers from Queensland. Suzie Bee from City of Darwin also attended to support Samantha Eveleigh, the NT Finalist for the Traffic Controller of the Year award 2022. Samantha, affectionately known as Sam, discovered her nomination during a significant event shift in late January.

Sam, a Senior Traffic Controller at Trafficwerx NT for six years, recently acquired her WZ1 tickets, enabling her to make on-site changes. Despite her achievements, Sam remains humble, making her recognition as the NT state finalist a testament to her own belief in herself and her abilities. The awards ceremony held great importance for Sam, and her best friend Anita joined the Trafficwerx NT team to provide moral support.

We are thrilled to announce Sam’s extraordinary success. She won the inaugural Indigenous Traffic Controller of the Year award and the highly coveted National Traffic Controller of the Year award, securing two out of the three accolades. Trafficwerx is proud that esteemed industry leaders recognized Sam as an incredible asset to Traffic Management and road safety in the Northern Territory and across Australia. She is a true role model for Indigenous women in construction and a staunch advocate for the well-being of all road workers, users, and pedestrians, promoting safe working conditions for all.
